Jozankei Onsen Hanamomiji — A One-Night Onsen Ryokan Drive from Sapporo, with Kaiseki and Night Illuminations

We paid for this stay ourselves.

It's a bit far from central Sapporo, but after soaking in the onsen with the mountain view, the drive felt worth it.

Basics

Onsen

We bathed separately, and it was wonderful — soaking while looking out over the mountains was the most relaxing part of the trip.

Room

It was a tatami room and very spacious. When we came back from dinner the futons had been laid out for us — a lovely touch.

The ryokan provided a yukata for my child, who loved it, and a baby basket bed as well.

Kaiseki dinner

The kaiseki dinner was excellent. It wasn't served in the room but in a separate dining room.

From our photos, each setting had a red lacquer box of small appetizers, an individual hot pot of beef and vegetables, rice cooked in a lidded pot, sashimi, a smoked duck and salmon salad, a simmered dish and chawanmushi.

Breakfast the next morning was good too.

Night illuminations

Near the ryokan there's a path with lights wrapped around the trees. We walked it after dinner, still in our yukata.

Lounge

There's a lounge with large speakers and an audio system — a place to relax and listen to music.

Downsides

It's a bit far from central Sapporo, and the onsen town feels a little dated. Everything else was great.
