Hampton Inn Kanab — A Great-Value Overnight on a Las Vegas–Grand Canyon Loop

I thought it would just be a pass-through night, but the mountain view and the pool made it more memorable than expected.

Basics

Why Kanab

Last December we rented a car in San Francisco and drove the American West down to LA. Kanab is a small town at the southern tip of Utah, just above the Arizona border.

If you loop from Las Vegas around the Grand Canyon you need a night somewhere in the middle; Kanab was well placed and I wanted a night in a quiet town.

The view

Red mountains fill the window. Opening the curtains in the morning was the best moment of the stay — it felt like a quiet countryside town.

Pool and breakfast

The pool was better than expected — we swam and soaked in the hot water to shake off the drive.

Breakfast is enough for a light start to the day.

What stuck with me

The town felt like it had paused in time — the staff were using flip phones, and I thought: time really moves slowly here.

Where we ate

We had dinner at Don Beto's nearby. It isn't the Mexican restaurant you might imagine — it's truly local. Worth trying for the experience; the menu is huge.

Where we meant to go

Best Friends Animal Sanctuary: a large no-kill sanctuary caring for about 1,600 animals, close to the hotel, with tours. Free tours are listed — confirm on the official site (bestfriends.org/sanctuary) before you go. We booked a free tour but didn't make it.

Bottom line

Pool, breakfast and free parking for the price. A perfect stop to rest in the middle of a road trip.

FAQ

Is breakfast included?

We paid breakfast included; it was enough for a light meal.

Is parking free?

Parking was free for us.

Where can you eat nearby?

We ate at Don Beto's, a very local Mexican restaurant with a huge menu.

How far are Zion and the Grand Canyon North Rim?

By map routing (OSRM, from central Kanab): about 67 km / 1 h 10 min to Zion's south entrance (Springdale) and about 130 km / 2 h to the North Rim. The North Rim road closes seasonally, so check the official National Park Service site first.
